Fall Play Day 2014 was held at Thundering Hooves Farm on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Mother Nature provided us a short rain shower which only slowed us down a little. The weather forecast limited our turn out. However, everyone enjoyed the food, company, and events. The horse speed events was exciting with 7 contestants going for the pay window, 7 in poles, 7 in barrels, and 4 in flags. Patrick Hunter acted as arena crew coordinator, time keeper, judge and announcer. We had a great crew of volunteers and spectators joining in the fun and camaraderie.

Videos shot by ASGRA member and webmaster Cowboy Frank Harrell at the 2014 Arizona Gay Rodeo, Febuary 16, 2014
Equestrian Speed Events:
Pits the horse, under the skillful hand of its rider, against the clock. Negotiating the prescribed pattern is a test of the rider's skill and the horse's speed and agility. A running start is permitted in these events and the fastest time wins.
Barrel Race--Contestants vie for the fastest time in running a 3 point, cloverleaf pattern around three barrels
Barrel Racing
Pole Bending--Horse and rider compete for fastest time working a linear pattern through six equally spaced poles
Pole Bending
Flag Race--A triangular pattern similar to that of the barrel race is used, with the substitution of a pole in place of barrel number three. The two other barrels will have a bucket that is 3/4 full of rabbit pellets placed on top of it, and a flag in one of these buckets. The rider on horse back picks up the flag out of the first bucket on the first barrel and attempt to place the flag in the second bucket. Contestants vie for the fastest time with proper placing of the flag in second bucket!
Flag Race
Roping event:
Designed for beginners. This event always begin with the contestant in the "roping box." An imaginary start line runs across the front of the roping box and the chute where the calf or steer is held.
Woody Roping--Contestant stands in a roping box and when the calf roping dummy (woody) clears the barrier, the roper attempts to throw the loop over woody's head. Once the loop passes over the calf's head, the contestant must pull up the slack in the rope. Contestants vie for catching woody with the fastest time!
Calf Roping on Foot (We will be using a Calf Dummy, not a live animal)
Goat Dressing:
Another beinners event involving two contestants who must get a pair of men's jocky shorts on a goat. We will be using a dummy goat not the real thing.
Dummy Goat Dressing--The team stands 50 feet from the point where the goat is tethered. One of the team members has a pair of jockey-style underwear worn over their forearms. When the whistle sounds, the team runs to the goat. The team member without the underwear picks up the goat's rear hooves, grabs the underwear from around the other member's arms, and pulls it up the legs of the goat. Both team members must then race back to the start/finish line and cross the finish line to stop the time. The underwear must stay over the goat's tail bone until the timer is tagged by both members.
Calf Roping on Foot (We will be using a Dummy goat, not a live animal)
Sandwiches, snacks, sodas and other refreshments are provided for purchase. All proceeds benefits ASGRA and ASGRA's designated charity.
